You've got a very nice and interesting blog here, my friend. I always feel glad whenever I encounter people who have the same passion and love for music like what I actually have. I also admire your efforts to share your bright ideas on music education - lending a hand to make a difference. Those music teaching resources that you've shared are really very useful and appropriate so I'm looking forward to reading more <a href="http://www.musicteachershelper.com/blog/" rel="nofollow">music teaching tips</a> from you. Thanks again and see you around. Cheers!

Keith,
Great post! I've been dabbling with audio editing software, especially when at home, I love to write music. I've been trying to find an audio interface to connect my microphone into my computer to record audio, but haven't been able to find one that was convenient and could go from XLR to USB. All of the added features seem fantastic as well.

Thanks!

It's so cool how we have so many resources that are free for us to use. Many of the Web 2.0 applications and programs will be a great help when I become a music Educator. This podcast was very interesting. I can't wait to try the programs you talked about. I believe they will be very beneficial in my future.

I think this program is very interesting. I always wanted to try Garage Band, but never had the opportunity. I'm used to Sibelius, so I think branching out and using a mixing program like this would be a worthwhile experience.

This is a very interesting product. I have been looking for a good recording device that I can hook into my computer via USB and this one sounds pretty low-maintenance. The sound quality was also quite good. I will definitely check it out.

Hello! Thanks for this episode. I have been wanting to learn how to record some audio on my computer, but I really don't know a whole lot. I have two questions, would you suggest this "icicle" to a beginner, that is, would it be easy for me to use even though I don't know a whole lot about these things? Also, what microphone would you suggest I look for if I am looking to record things with a decent quality, but nothing too serious? Please let me know what you think. Thanks!

For the past few years I have been looking for a quality DAW for windows that I felt really fit me and what I have ben trying to accomplish as an amateur composer. This episode on Music Creator 5 has really opened my eyes to a venue I had taken much time to look into before.

It's mindblowing that there are so many resources out there for us musicians and music educators to use! Noteflight seems like a fantastic way to create and publish your own music without having to purchase expensive software like Sibelius. And Indaba seems like a great way to be able to communicate with other artists and advertise your own skills. Thanks for sharing!

Good topic choice--something that needs a lot more attention today. I'm actually an organist and wonder about a lot of the extended exposure to loud volume levels. I was glad to hear you mention even how playing in a band or wind ensemble can have damaging effects, that seems to often be forgotten.

i am currently a music education major. thank you for your review of this product. the nanoKey seems like it would be a great tool for writing music into a program and for in the classroom setting to enable the students to use technology in this way.

great podcast,

web 2.0 is quickly becoming a viable often free resource that is very helpful when it comes to music education and education in general.
there are many other schedule resources available from the web 2.0 spectrum and they make scheduling for rehearsals and performances much easier.

its great to see where the web 2.0 phenomenon will take us and what we will be able to do in the future.

It is amazing how many things are out there to use, free at our disposal, that we never hear about. Thanks for taking to time to educate a future music teacher about these sites. I looked at both of them, and I think that they are really great. The free notation application is great for college students such as myself who don't have enough money to purchase finale or sibelius. Awesome podcast!

This is a great podcast. Right now in our music tech. class at Grove City College, Dr. Pisano is teaching us all about Web 2.0 technology. I checked out both of these sights and they are very neat. More ideas to add to the list of helpful items for teaching and for furthering my own education. Can't wait to try them out! Thanks for posting.

These are some awesome products! I have heard of the key before, but I had not heard of the pad. As a future music educator, I believe these could be very effective in a middle or high school class. I will definitely be checking these out.

Great podcast! I think it's worth mentioning that there are also some great web applications out there that cover the administrative side of things as well. I have used www (dot)ututti(dot)com to great success in my school district, and its a fairly new website.

Keith,

Congratulations on a wonderful 50 episodes of Music Tech for ME! I had the opportunity to be at the MENC event in Washington, as well, and Dr. Pisano's comments are right on the mark! To clarify a question that was posed during the podcast, this event is scheduled to take place in Washington, D.C. again next year.

Thanks for everything you do for the community!

Mr. Mason, my name is Trevor Duell and I am a music education major at Fort Hays State Univeristy in Hays, KS. I started listening to you podcasts as an assignment for my Instructional Technology Class. I found your podcast on youtube.com really interesting. I just wanted to share with you my experiences with teaching using Youtube exclusively.

I am a student instructor for our Saturday morning string program called Western Kansas String Academy and one of the classes that I taught in the spring semester for the first time was called the iPod/Youtube exchange. Middle school and high school students would bring in and share appropriate music related videos and then we would discuss what we saw and heard. I was always amazed at the chain reaction this would cause every Saturday morning. One video shared would remind another student of one they had seen which would remind another and so on and so on. There was never any shortage of thinks to watch and listen to and we also had several deep and thought provoking discussions. I am also amazed at the amount of great orchestras and soloist performances there are on youtube.com

Thanks,
Trevor Duell

Stengel99,

That is very strange. Music Tech for ME is available through U.S. iTunes. Do a "Power Search" at the iTunes directory for "Music Tech for ME". It should take you to the Podcast at which point you can subscribe. Please let me know if you still have the problem.

Thanks for the podcast, guys. I enjoyed it thoroughly.

One request: Are you aware that your podcast is not available through the U.S. iTunes? (At least that's the message I seem to get when I click the icon.) How about making it available somehow?

Again, thanks!

Joe,

It was great having you on the show. As for that "Pittsburghese" thing...you're talking to a "Southerner" here. Accents are a wonderful part of heritage! we shall embrace them. Skype was not very clear that day. I would say in the future, we may do a "Double Ender". That is where you record your conversation while I record my coversation. You would then just email me your part and I would create the mix. Thanks again for doing the interview and we will do another in the very near future. Blessings!

Keith,

Thanks for the podcast. It was fun and always opens up new thoughts for me. Funny thing is that no matter how much I try, the "Pittsburghese" always comes out in my voice!

I wish the Skype was a little clearer. I didn't have that kind of audio quality on my side, you were coming out very clear. I'll have to check into that... Thanks again!

Lessons of this type will always benefit from having a live person guiding and directing. However, resources of this nature can also be of great value.

Sounds very interesting! I'll check it out!

However, my gut feeling is that those who are really serious about music will benefit most from a live person guiding, evaluating, commenting, etc. on their musical work. A computer program won't explain why a particular musical passage doesn't sound as good as it could.

Having said that, it may turn out to be incredible.

Hi Brian,

Thanks for listening and for posting. As for your question, yes there are a few good text books to use. Check out Course Technology at www.course.com for some excellent text book resources. Backbeat Publishing is another good publisher of music technology materials. The best sources you have is the internet. Websites like James Frankel, Tom Rudolph, the TI:ME Website, and a few others are loaded with some great resources. You can go to several of these websites and you will find they have resource pages full of listings. I have a small one on my website as well. Blessings!

I just listened to this podcast and I am very impressed with the size of the music tech. program that Mr. Rudolph has been able to develop even at the high school level. I am currently in my junior year at Grove City College studying music education and I am enrolled in a music tech course this semester.

In my high school, they had just started a music technology course a year or two before I left and I didn't have the opportunity to take it. I heard from some of my peers who did, however, that they were unimpressed with the content and quality of the curriculum. I suppose it's to be expected that any new course would take a few years to develop and grow and it seems that they're doing something right in Haverton.

One question I have: What kind of resources are out there to enhance a music technology course curriculum besides the standard software programs and maybe a textbook or two?

In my high school, they had just started a music technology course a year or two before I left and I didn’t have the opportunity to take it. I heard from some of my peers who did, however, that they were unimpressed with the content and quality of the curriculum. I suppose it’s to be expected that any new course would take a few years to develop and grow and it seems that they’re doing something right in Haverton.

One question I have: What kind of resources are out there to enhance a music technology course curriculum besides the standard software programs and maybe a textbook or two?

Wow! What a great program! The ability to create such a computer program just seems incomprehensible to me. Tom Carruth is essentially changing music technology and education not only for songwriters and sound/audio technicians, but primarily in the classroom. The fact that kids are actually asking for homework assignments dealing with Finale is amazing. This Finale, Finale 2008, I believe will be the best we have seen. The use of real audio samples instead of synthesized recordings is genius.

Wow, what an informative podcast!! It is very intimidating when browsing the different types of technologies, like PDA's and smart phones, because there are so many different possibilities when it comes to applications and function. This podcast got me started on thinking about what I may want to incorporate into my life in the future. As a future music educator, I believe incorporating this technology will be of great benefit. Thanks again for this informative podcast. I look forward to future posts!!

I really liked a lot of the information from this podcast. The smart music program would definitely be very useful me as a future music educator. It sounds like something that students would enjoy using. It was also nice to hear that most of the employees that work at Make Music either have a degree in music education or have taught music. It was also exciting to hear about all of the new features of Finale. It sounds like it is a lot easier to use and there is so much more tha you can do with it.

Mr. Mason,

I really enjoyed all of the content in this epoisode. I've listened to a few other episodes and all of them have been very informative.

As a future music educator I feel it is important to get as much information about software, other technology, and personal experiences of fellow educators. I really appreciate your insights into various aspects of the teaching world. Being aware of new technology and staying on top of a budget is an essential element to successfully serving students in a classroom.

As for high speed internet, I also have a cable modem at home and it definitely makes working at home efficient and enjoyable. Wireless routers are really nice to have in a home with multiple desktop and laptop computers!

Thanks again.

I found your segment on music notation software very interesting. My own experience with attempts at notation software were with Midisoft's Recording Session 4 and Magix's Midi Studio 7. Neither were notation driven, both being designed more as midi sequencers. Thus Notion's products are very appealing to the end of notating music. Granted, as a college student, a $600 software program may be out of my price range, particularly since I would prove a casual user. I'd consider purchasing Protege, which seems to be available around $70. It'd be interesting to contrast the functionality of both programs as well.

I just found this post so interesting! I am a music education major and always find it helpful to learn about new products that are out there for me to hopefully use as a teacher some day. So many times, we find finale or some other program and just stay in that little box forever, but it's encouraging to hear people talking about new programs that can be used as excellent resources

It's really great to hear about all these new (and exciting) technologies!
'Notion' sounds like it's going to really change composition in the future! Being able to immediately record, compose, and reproduce makes work in the classroom and the entire music world much easier and user-friendly.
Thanks for opening my eyes to 'Notion' and 'Protege'--it's nice to know these are trusted products from a tested company. Also hearing your experience with Apple's new products is helpful to know first-hand how they perform.

Tackling new programs can be a very daunting task, thank you for making is manageable. I often find myself sticking to the programs I know because the idea of learning a whole new program is too intimidating. However, your 8 ideas give me renewed hope! There are so many great programs that I am excited to check out and I feel like I have the tools to tackle them successfully now. Thank you very much!

Hello,

Thanks for doing this podast. I really enjoyed it! At first I wasn't sure how I would feel about online music instruction since the person isn't right there next to you, but after listening to your podcast, I was pleasantly surprised. The thing I thought was really cool was the fact that all of these very accomplished musicians can give lessons to anyone who wants them (and they can have them right in their house!). This is definitely a good example of using music technology in a very positive way. I'll be interested to see how these online music lessons develop. Thanks again for the podcast and keep up the great work!

I enjoyed listening to this podcast. I found it very informative and helpful. It is good to hear that there is another music software program being developed such as Notion. Also I have been considering getting a wireless router for my home and it was good to get some specific information about that process.

This podcast was very informative.
Even for people who never used Finale or Smart Music, Tom Carruth explains the new applications and features for "Finale 2008" very well. It was nice that he gave some examples on certain procedures to help the listener understand better.
I specifically enjoyed hearing the brief history of Finale. Most of the time, for any product we use (myself included),we do not know what is involved in the process of how it got to us in its current state.
Lastly, I will definitely check out the "Smart Music" website. As a future music teacher, it could add a whole new dimension to students' musical experience in the classroom.

Joseph,

Thanks for the kind words! As for listing with other directories, I am listed with Podcast Alley. However, I'm still figuring out how to list with the others. I will "Keep at it"!

You are so right Jill. Various models and makes of computers can add to the dilemma of this issue. This situation many times effects school labs as well. Due to budget restraints, many schools cannot afford to update all their computers at the same time.In these lab situations, I can only suggest that you try to keep each system together as close as possible. It may sometimes be necessary set each computer to the same configuration as possible; which could mean, that the oldest computer sets the parameters for all the stations.

Great episode. This is a notorious issue in the music technology field. In our studio we face a larger issue, if only that we have several different Macs, all bought at different times. Some have older versions of software which are now maxed out in reference to the hardware, and then some newer ones require a newer version of software and hardware - all are DAWs. Our predicament at Sharkbait has been: Do we cater to the older computer and sacrifice the newest fixes and capabilities of the newer version, or do we progress with the times (keeping up with the Jones's, it seems at times) and eventually create a dinosaur computer?

It is my advice to anyone who wants to have more than one workstation (we have three) - buy them all at once. That way all will be the same and can be updated accordingly together. But is this truly good advice? I mean, how many people/studios can purchase three DAWs simultaneously? Schools can sometimes and do - for just this reason, I suppose.

Thank you for your podcast. As a Mac user (most times) I have found the following website awfully helpful with seeking compatibility and troubleshooting for Mac-based software and operation system info: http://discussions.apple.com/index.jspa - hope it helps someone else.

Keep up the great work, K.M.! See you around Belmont.

I forget how I found you---Podcast Alley, maybe---I am the webmaster for my son's Suzuki Violin Association (also a musician and podcaster), and I will be introducing them to this site to show how music education can be augmented by good use of web and podcast technology.
I wish you much success!
